About Polyurethane Wheels

Drive wheel.jpg

Polyurethane wheels are used for a wide variety of application and uses. Depending on the application, polyurethane wheels can range in many different sizes and widths and are made with different types of materials, including rubber, steel and cast iron. Generally, they can be available with or without bearings. Polyurethane wheels with stronger materials, like high capacity rubbers, won't cause damage to flooring.

Polyurethane wheels are also more durable and can withstand more use. In some cases, polyurethane wheels have rubber that is molded on, though this type won't carry as much weight as other kinds. Some polyurethane wheels can withstand up to 20,000 or more kilometers of rolling before wearing out.

Polyurethane wheels are sometimes designed to be track wheels in applications where the noise and corrosion resistance is of utmost importance. In areas where flammable items are present, they are less likely to create sparks, which can be a hazard in some work areas.

Polyurethane wheels are available to be made for just about any application's requirements. In most applications that require less speeds, these wheels have better carrying capacity. Polyurethane wheels are typically manufactured by coating a steel wheel hub with adhesive. Then the hub is placed in a mold and liquid polyurethane is poured into it and the layers bond together. The adhesives may include epoxies or urethanes. The wheel must then be cured at a very specific temperature.

The most typical uses for polyurethane wheels are in the food service industry and for a wide variety of industrial and commercial applications. The main advantages of the wheels are protection of flooring, strong capacity and quietness. An example of a use for these wheels includes the food carts used for room service at hotels. The cart offers strength to carry the heaviest plates and silverware, won't damage expensive hotel flooring and won't wake up the people in the room next to you.
