Forum:Super crazy insane idea that I'm very serious about though I know everyone will hate and piss on
Let's change our name from uncyclopedia to something else. --ShabiDOO 09:54, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

- Meh.
What would our URL be? en.somethingelse.co? Anton (talk) 16:34, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
Biggest argument for? Wikia gets the far majority of the google traffic (99%?) and the far majority of external links. We are a bit of a dead island floating in fork obscurity...no? Changing the name doesn't mean starting over. --ShabiDOO 16:51, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
- With a new name, we will get even less traffic because nobody will know what the new name is and thus not look for it. Any bits of google traffic we get now would go straight to the Wikia version. -- 19:55, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
- We would be more likely to show up in search results with a different brand. As of now if you search for "Fisher Price: A retrospective" or "A Wizard did it" or "Extra mega brownie points" I don't even have the .co version in my results...only wikia. There are links to pages on other websites (that are barely relevant to the search) including very obscure websites. As far as I understand it if you are a fork with the same name as the original site...the search results by default go to the original site and sometimes only list the original site. --ShabiDOO 20:17, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
- I'm getting results from sites like tvtropes, Pinterest, and thefreedictionary.com, none of which I would consider obscure. There's no real way of knowing if a new name would cause us to appear in the Google results ahead of these sites, but I would bet that it doesn't. Google places sites that receive lots of hits (or give them money or something) ahead of other sites even if the results are less accurate. I'm pretty sure that creating a new site to get ahead in the Google results would backfire since even less people will know about it or visit it initially. It's like an endless cycle until someone important enough to promote you stumbles upon your site. -- 20:48, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
- Then I'm going to fork this fork. It will be called the meta-fork-fork. The url will be www.meta-fork-fork.lol And I'm going to convince SPIKE to come join me and the two of us will create the greatest uncyclopedia ever and google will notice and put us at the top of every search that any user makes about anything and everything and that's the way things will be. --ShabiDOO 23:13, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
- How about we fork Google and put this Uncyclopedia at top of the forked Google, except then someone will fork the forked Google and put ED at the top of the meta-fork-forked Google and everyone on the internet will cry and go to Yahoo instead. Then, SPIKE will become president. -- 01:44, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

This is actually a decent idea
Unless someone removes SPIKE and gets the sites working as one, we're at a traffic disadvantage to him. I think we're the more fun and better looking site with users who are far less anal, but we need to differentiate ourselves even more than being the 2nd Wikipedia parody who Google abuses. I'd get some focus on writing/fixing more "essential" articles, a decent way of linking featured articles of the same category or removing crap ones from some of the current templates. We definitely need another forest fire week. But even that is dressing around the edges. We had 90 active users last month to 190 at Wikia. --Nikau (talk) 13:04, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
- I don't think looking at active users is necessarily the best way of assessing this issue. Wikia may have had 190 active users but if you look at recent changes, you'll quickly see that the site is more or less inactive. SPIKE edits a lot. Then, maybe you'll see like two edits from some other guy and one edit from another guy. But I agree that we need another FFW. All vital articles that suck should be linked to a featured article with a similar premise. -- 14:54, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
- I would be glad to be proven wrong but have there been many "prolific" new users who joined since the fork and have only edited the fork, or were we all here pre-2013? There are a few users who joined the Wikia version since 2013 and have written a handful of features. Of course its a case of do as SPIKE says or get the cold shoulder off the site, but they are unlikely to scroll down and try .co once they've left.
- If we had a criminally good coder I'd suggest making a second, non-Wikipedia-looking main page mimicking a popular and in fashion internet news site (Quartz, Medium, Vice) as an option. We can chuck up some clickbait (I fucking love my clickbait) one liners on the titles linking to the articles and draw people in. It's cheap, it makes one feel filthy, but it may be necessary. Those sites tend to do a lot of "funny" explainations for things, theirs are bland and we've been doing it better for years, so it isn't even that much of a step away from our roots. Most people write here because it is the most free comedy site on the internet, not because of its dedication to being a direct parody of Jimbo's site. The wiki style is a means to an end of creating unique and diverse content. Hell, Cajek only ever wrote like 3 encyclopaedic pages and he's still funny as fuck.
- Finally, we need to cull a lot of the remaining trash entirely and polish up the 90% there articles left by great past users. Maybe even creating an injoke namespace to divide some of that from what makes sense to new readers. --Nikau (talk) 15:58, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
