Summary

Description
English: The Westbury White Horse, carved on the chalk escarpment of Salisbury Plain/The Bratton Downs below Bratton Castle, Wiltshire, 12 August 2017. Of uncertain date, it was 'restored' in 1778 when an earlier horse (facing the opposite way!) was obliterated. It was again 'remodelled' in 1873 and then in the 1950's concreted over by the local council to save on maintenance costs! The original carving was said to commemorate King Alfred's victory ove the Danes at the Battle of Ethandun in 878.
