Auto-QVFD

Hi, Sims. The voices in my head have instructed me to tell you about an auto-QVFD gadget. In your preferences, check the Gadgets tab, and find "QuickVFD" under the "Maintenance gadgets" header. I notice that you have an auto-QVFD script in your uncyclopedia.js, but I'm pretty sure the script is deprecated. I bring this up because of this and other such edits I've seen. The official QuickVFD gadget first checks QVFD to see if the page is already listed, and won't add it again if so. Just a hopefully-helpful tip for you. --Andorin Kato 02:14, August 23, 2011 (UTC)

Oh, it also properly adds the article with spaces instead of %20 in the name. (Per this.) --Andorin Kato 02:15, August 23, 2011 (UTC)
The QVFD gadget I used with that edit did add the %20 and so did not detect the existing QVFD entry. I need to figure out which part of my uncyclopedia.js needs to be fixed. Thanks for the tip! -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 02:19, August 23, 2011 (UTC)
Update: I removed the old script, but am using Firefox with the latest gadget. Dunno why it still added the %20 to my latest QVFD entry. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 02:28, August 23, 2011 (UTC)
While I could launch into an argument about how you should get a real browser and how firefox sucks these days, I'll just ask if you purged your personal js afterward and then did you reload? ctrl+f5 type reload, mind. Because if not, you may want to try that. 1234 ~ 16px-Pointy.png 02:36, 23 August 2011
Yes, I deleted everything in my uncyclopedia.js, then hit ctrl-f5. Maybe I should close then reopen my browser, since I had Uncyc open in two tabs at the time. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 02:39, August 23, 2011 (UTC)

Mirror Mirror

Hi Sims. I see you're an admin on the Mirror Uncyclopedia - http://mirror.uncyc.org/wiki/Special:BlockList. Congratulations. How does it and this site now relate? Has it become an archive of Uncyclopedia or an alternative version?? --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 07:21, April 20, 2012 (UTC)

I correct myself. An admin and bureaucrat: http://mirror.uncyc.org/wiki/Special:ListUsers/sysop --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 07:36, April 20, 2012 (UTC)
I haven't figured out the bureaucrat part, but I'm stumbling along with the sysop part. Its a hybrid of an archive and an alternative version: I'm leaving in a large number of Alicia Keys quotes rather than removing them all because there are too many to go in and remove them all. But I've reverted many of the worst changes back to prevandalized mirror versions of Uncyc articles, largely I'm going for archive. There aren't enough interested writers to make a good alternative version, in fact I find I only need to patrol about once a day so far to block the spammers and cyberbullies. However, I'm leaving a lot of the articles on there that were VFD here or burnt out of existence in Forest Fire week. I figure the mirror site is a good resource for those looking for a starting point for articles here that used to exist, to see what went wrong with them. That leaves a lot of crap sitting out there, but it's Carlb's server, and he doesn't seem to mind. I mostly just delete anything that smells of cyberbullying or spam or QVFD material. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 06:52, April 21, 2012 (UTC)
I saw you had perma banned Alicia Keys (now she can go back to making music) and working on the reverts. Good work Sims. A bureaucrat can de-opp an admin but I guess Carlb is on the top step as you say, it is his server. --Laurels.gifRomArtus*Imperator ® (Orate) 09:16, April 21, 2012 (UTC)
Actually, it was Carlb who banned Alicia Keys. She was replacing too many pages with pointless templates and generally mucking things up. She even put her templates on templates. I fixed some of those, and carlb fixed some. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 18:38, April 21, 2012 (UTC)
Cool! Good to see someone is over there doing good. I have half though about editing there as well as here (beyond the couple of articles I've just completely changed to featured version), but can't see the point unless we are trying to make it a direct mirror but with more content (ie nothing gets deleted from there.) Nominally Humane! 11:45 21 Apr
That's what I'm trying to do is make it more of a mirror site with more content (inclusionist instead of deletionist philosophy), so I hope you'll consider adding new pages there if you have time. The main Uncyc takes priority of course, though. I don't know if Carlb will update the mirror site to a mirror as of a more recent date than 2010 or not eventually. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 18:38, April 21, 2012 (UTC)

Bipolar Go Girl

Hello. I reverted your edit on bipolar girl, I thought the original flowed better in the rhythm of the page, and that exact line was actually quoted on the vfh voting page. Did you have a strong reason why the change would work better? Thanks. And how did you like the whole page, any feedback would be great. Aleister 1:39 28-4-'12

Overall, the page was well written. The reason I made the change was because "Bipolar Girl defines the inner energy and emotional drive of a really creative bipolar woman who has no one to blame but herself, and never does". seemed unclear to me....she never does blame herself? she never blames anyone but herself? So I thought I would clarify the sentence based on what I thought the meaning was. I did like the whole page, especially the pictures. I am abstaining from voting however because of a conflict of interest - I actually have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, this page seems to fit the stereotype well, but the page is more about what others see on the extreme side of things. I tend to be more on the depressive side of the disorder myself, and most of this page focuses on the extreme mania side of things. Since most people associate mania with bipolar disorder, I guess the page's focus on that side makes sense. But don't worry too much about me, I'm stable on my meds, and have been for a couple years. However, if I start actually believing the stuff on this site is real like the stuff on wikipedia, or if I start thinking that its all about me, (like all the drama that goes on for instance) then you know I have a problem. Now if I could just find a full-time permanent job at a workplace that could overlook things like, say, gaps in the resume...-- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 01:53, April 28, 2012 (UTC)
You have a point on the sentence structure, just because I know what it means doesn't mean everyone does. I'll try to tweak it so it glows like the sun. Thanks for all the sharing (and resumes, just get someone to say you worked for them. It is a controversial page, and I pulled it the first time in an attempt not to be mean, but reading it again I don't think it's really that mean and is complimentary in spots. Some of the most magical women I know are bipolar, and the really intelligent creative bipolar women are sooooo creative it blows my mind. Damn, the depression thing, are you always hyrdrated? I drink like a gallon and a half of water a day, it's just about all I drink, and have read on watercure.com and other places that depression is just a symptom of dehydration (and it may very well be true in many cases - most people who are depressed just mope about it, and I don't mean the heavy depressed episodes (another girl I know used to have them and take to her bed for weeks, now, hyrdrated!), but the minor cases of "da blues". The mania is focused on during the page, again, mainly, because the really intelligent creative ones have such great manic episodes that the humour and fun are all there. I'll go do some tweaks. thanks! Aleister 23:08 28-4-'12
Hmmmmm. I tried to reword it but everything sounded blah. Then I asked, and people I know seem to know what it means, that she never blames herself. So even if it can be taken both ways, maybe that's fine. People will take it as they "read" it, and I think most people will get the intended meaning (although once it's written the intended meaning always goes into "eye of the beholder" meaning). Wait, I just remembered, was it you who went on a great demonstration a couple of years ago and wrote about it here? If so, have you done any of the occupy stuff? Whoops, almost signed my real name. Aleister 00:32 29-4-'12
No, I haven't been involved in the occupy stuff, since I wasn't sure where to sign up, or whether it would do much good. Also, I do try to drink my water daily - I typically have four glasses (16 oz each) of water a day, so I'm pretty sure hydration isn't the issue. I did manage to get an interview the other day despite gaps in my resume (I put looking for work as the reason), but couldn't come up with a good answer for "what makes you unique". I said my experiences, but couldn't give a good description of the experiences. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 00:40, April 29, 2012 (UTC)
Ah, work nowadays depends on who you know anyway. People get so many resumes that I don't know if they even look at them. Maybe where the gaps are you can try cutting holes in the paper with scissors, and I like the "what makes you unique" question (instant answer: "seven toes where five should be" would have caught their attention). On the hydration thing, what I read is that for good health we need to drink at least 1/2 our weight in pounds in ounces a day (if you weigh 110 pounds then 55 ounces of water a day) in addition to an extra and equal amount to the amount of dehydrating coffee or soda we drink (someone said on your user page that coffee and you know each other). If you drink 200 cups of coffee a day then an equal amount of water is needed (in addition to the 1/2 pound=ounce ratio). We've been told here of your exploits on the mirror site, yay! Does anyone know who that Alison Keyes actually is, or why she/he vandalized so much? That could be an intriquing story. I know the mirror site shows up on Bing searches. This gets too long, so I'll go find some trouble to get into. Aleister 12:16 30-4-'12

Greetings!

Thought I'd let you know about a new feature we've got on recent changes, called "patrolled edits". If you do any cleanup on RC, patrolling can be a useful tool. Essentially, it "approves" edits by any users who are not in the auto-patrolled user group (IPs, newbies, etc). It makes it much easier for multiple people to sweep up, as they don't have to keep checking the same pages. You can read about it here. Also, if you'd like to patrol multiple edits at a time, or just patrol edits directly from RC, I've got a special javascript which I whipped up recently. You can use it by putting importScript( "User:Bizzeebeever/scripts/patrol.js" ) into either your uncyclopedia.js or monobook.js, depending on which theme you use.

If you already knew about it, then please disregard this message. Cheers. ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngMon, May 14 '12 0:06 (UTC)

I knew about the patrolled edits, but not about your javascript tool. I attempted to put the code above into my uncyclopedia.js but it didn't work. I even tried copying and pasting the whole thing but still couldn't get it to work. Any idea what I was doing wrong here? -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 03:46, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
Are you sure it's not working? It just adds a "patrol this change" to individual diffs, or "patrol these changes" to grouped changes on Special:RecentChanges. Might be easy to miss. ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngMon, May 14 '12 13:36 (UTC)
I've tried refreshing my cache to see the difference, but I see no "patrol this change" on any individual diffs or anything like that on grouped changes in either Firefox or Safari. Next, I might try Internet Explorer to see if that makes a difference. Maybe I didn't add it to the right page? I added it to User:Simsilikesims/scripts/uncyclopedia.js and to User:Simsilikesims/uncyclopedia.js - did I use the wrong page or something? Which one should I use? -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 23:21, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
Update: It seems to be working on Internet Explorer, but not on the other browsers. I may have to check if java is enabled on the other browsers. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 23:25, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
You just need to use User:Simsilikesims/uncyclopedia.js, which corresponds to the theme you use. Also, make sure that javascript is enabled (Java is different, it's a plug-in). On those other browsers, do you have a NoScript extension? If you don't know what I'm talking about, the answer is probably "no". If you do, that might be what is interfering. ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngMon, May 14 '12 23:32 (UTC)
Found and disabled a McAfee Scriptcheck tool in Firefox, but its still not working in Firefox. Google Chrome is working though, as well as IE. Got Safari working. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 23:51, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
Ummmm. Betty Swallocks. I'll get back to you. Thought I tested it in Firefox. ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngTue, May 15 '12 3:53 (UTC)
Ok, looks like problem solved; it was a Firefox-specific "bug", which is to say that element.innerText is not a valid property in Firefox, much to my surprise. That'll teach me not to use a library in the future. *bangs head with pipe* You can probably turn your ScriptCheck tool back on, as it (probably) didn't have anything to do with this. And thanks for helping me find the bug! ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngTue, May 15 '12 4:09 (UTC)

Template:Old computing

Good addition. See also User talk:MrN8999#MS-DOS. Did you have enough of our serious discussion? Spıke ¬ 02:37 28-May-12

FORTRAN coming fourth turned out to be a happy coincidence :) I thought it was going to be a template of antique computing terms, and since floppy disk was there, I thought Fortran fit in. Windows by itself doesn't fit into the category of old computing because we currently are on Windows 7 - which is still Windows. Windows BC or Windows 3.1 on the other hand, are arguable, especially since those were in the time of 5 1/2" floppies and 3 1/2" floppies, or during a fictional time period (in the case of BC). It was also around the first time I got an IBM compatible computer with DOS and Windows 3.1 on it, while I was in college. I heard about FORTRAN from an older professor who taught the PASCAL class that I took in college (I got an A out of the class), and it was dated even then (around 1991 or so).-- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 07:33, May 28, 2012 (UTC)

My first was an IMSAI 8080, lights, switches, and all. Your recent vigilance regarding Coolidge I mentioned on my talk page. Spıke ¬ 21:15 29-May-12

I find myself astonished

I find myself astonished that Wikia actually listened to any of us, much less a woman -- Ha, Ha! Just Kidding! Seriously, though, did you get any impression that they were willing to compromise on anything else, such as reducing the CONTENT WARNING to a notice at the top of every page, instead of something that has to be clicked in order to view our content? ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngTue, Jun 19 '12 6:27 (UTC)

I haven't heard from them, to be honest. Then again, I didn't know who (which email address) to direct my annoyed emails to either, so I haven't gotten any feedback from them. At least we know they read forums. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 18:13, June 19, 2012 (UTC)
Huh. In that case, I might suspect it was Sannse, although if she were reading the forum, I would wonder why she didn't post... weird. ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngWed, Jun 20 '12 1:53 (UTC)
Possibly because the warning wasn't her idea and came from higher-ups, thus getting permission from higher-ups would be required to change the warning, or to figure out what would be appropriate, in a corporate context. Representing a corporation is not easy, and I don't envy her. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 02:01, June 20, 2012 (UTC)
I sure wish I knew what this particular corporation was thinking. They're censoring us, and meanwhile, ads for http://cannabis.wikia.com are running in our spotlight area at the bottom of the page... and that wiki is utterly uncensored. Boggles the mind. ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngWed, Jun 20 '12 2:07 (UTC)
Indeed. -- Simsilikesims(♀UN) Talk here. 02:15, June 20, 2012 (UTC)
Hey guys and gals! You can contact them here: Special:Contact. I sent them two: one of them is on my talkpage somewhere and the other one is on the forum. I'd like to see the traffic stats to gauge what impact this crap had, but they blocked it AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGHHH!!! Talk Mattsnow 02:22, June 20, 2012 (UTC)
I noticed those. I was going to ask you if you'd heard back from them. ~ BB ~ (T) Icons-flag-us.pngWed, Jun 20 '12 2:29 (UTC)
First time yes, the second one I replied to it. It was not stated it was a "no-reply" thing, but I'm gona send it again to Special:Contact right now. Anyway, they answered the 1st one, here is the copy pasta:

Just wrote to them

"Hi! I'm a regular user on Uncyclopedia and this issue just came to my attention. I'd like to say that we are trying our best to eradicate the addition of unfunny profanity, which we consider vandalism. We are constantly looking out to revert these. Also, each new user gets linked to a page called "How to be Funny and not just Stupid", (http://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/Htbfanjs) which makes it clear that random immature jokes will be reverted and result in a ban.

We also very strictly enforce the rules over photographic content, which is that no pornographic, shock or gory images will be tolerated. I can state with confidence that there is not a single one of these on the site.

I think we are comparable, or aiming to be comparable, to TheOnion.com. This website is considered Safe for work, and yet, host videos such as "The Skull Fucking Bill of 2007" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Btw1eh4mitQ), among many others.

In conclusion, we are certainly having fun at Uncyclopedia, but the community does not tolerate being offensive for the sake of it, and it will always be that way. That is why I feel adding that banner is unjustified. I hope you can give me some feedback.

Thank you."

Just got feedback

"Hi Mattsnow,

Thanks for sending in your thoughts about the Content Warning page for Uncyclopedia and others. Honestly, we're not concerned about the profanity (funny or not) on the site. We are in total agreement that the community at Uncyc is in it for fun and want to support you all. We get a significant number of complaints from web searchers who run across Uncyclopedia and don't realize that they've landed on a parody site. The result is them sending in angry and otherwise upset emails to us regarding the content on Uncyc.

The warning is only shown to logged in users once (until they log out) and is shown to anonymous visitors once every 24 hours.

We strongly believe that this warning will indicate to these folks that the content they're about to see is not intended to be encyclopedic in the way they're expecting. On the flip side, we also believe the warning won't stop anyone who wants to read or contribute to Uncyc.

Thanks again, Mattsnow."

Assume the position! it's the UnSignpost!
